HERKIMER-Stephen Salanco age 85 of Oberle Roadpassed away on Monday morning January 14, 2008 in HeritageHealth CareCenter, Utica.
He was born on June 20, 1922 in the Town of Herkimer, son of the late Alexander and Pearl Kadylak Salanco. A lifelong Herkimer resident he was educated in Herkimer Public Schools.
On August 3, 1946 he was united in marriage with the former Rosemary Baum in Annunciation Church,Ilion. Together they owned and operated Salanco Brothers Dairy Farm in the town of Herkimer. Mr. Salanco retired from dairy farming in 1980.
Steve had a sincere belief in God and led a devoted Episcopal life. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Herkimer.
He had a strong sense of community and had served as a member of the West Canada Valley Central School Board of Education. He was also a member of the National Farmers Organization and had served as a director of the Farm Credit Association. For sixteen years he was a member and past president of the Oak Hill Cemetery Board and for sixty-one years a member of the Herkimer Lodge # 1439 B.P.O.E.
Mr. Salanco was an avid hunter and fisherman. He took great pride in being a founding member of the Buckhorn Camp at Miller Parkin the Adirondack Mountains.
To all who knew him, he will always be remembered for his down to earth manner. Any conversation with him was frank and to the point but you could always feel the warmth and friendship whenever you were with him. He will be greatly missed.
Surviving are his loving wife of sixty-one years Rosemary, one son Stephen Thomas Salanco and his wife Cheryl of Herkimer, three brothers, Alexander Salanco of Clearwater, FL, Daniel and his wife Helen Salanco of Little Falls, Andrew and his wife Betty Salanco of Newport, two sisters, Mary Wiernecki and her husband Mitch of Herkimer, Helen Moulton of Seminole, FL, two grandchildren, Frances Marie Salanco of Tampa, FL and Jordon Gifford of Herkimer along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Ralph J. Salanco in 1973, a brother, Nicholas Salanco and a sister, Anna Weber.
Funeral service with Holy Eucharist will be on Thursday at 11:00 am in Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Paul Bailey, Rector will officiate. Interment in Oak Hill Cemeterywill be private. There are no calling hours.
Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. Envelopes will be available at the church.
Members of Herkimer Lodge # 1439 B.P.O.E. are asked to meet in the church at 10:45 am Thursday for ritualistic services.
