CLIFTON PARK-Steven W. Schermerhorn age 76 passed away peacefully on Sunday morning August 19, 2018 in the Evergreen Commons, East Greenbush. He had the support and comfort of his devoted wife Susan at his side. He was born on April 26, 1942 in Schenectady, son of the late Wallace Schermerhorn and Dorothy Sauer. Steven was raised in Schenectady and was a graduating from Linton High School with the, class of 1960. In 1960 he enlisted in the US Coast Guard where he served aboard the Cutter USS Rockaway and was a part of the blockade during the Cuban Missle Crisis. He was honorably discharged in 1964. After his military service, he furthered his education by graduating from SUNY Cobelskill attaining a degree in Business Administration. On August 4, 1967 he was united in marriage to the former Susan Horan in Saint Josephs RC Church, Richfield Springs. Mr. Schermerhorn worked at one time for the State Bank of Albany and later for the Credit Department of the Cluett And Peabody Company in Troy for many years. He was last employed by the Prudential Insurance Company of America, retiring in 2005. Steven had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Catholic life. In his leisure time he enjoyed golfing, hiking, boating and cars. To all who knew him he was a kind, caring and helpful man who was happiest when he was surrounded by his many friends and family. He will be sadly missed.
He leaves behind his loving wife of fifty-one years, Susan , a daughter, Stephanie Schermerhornand her husband Jeffery Lee of Tacoma, WA, one sister, Susan Stensonand her husband Gerald of Delmar, a sister-in-law, Paula Schermerhorn of Austin, TX, a niece, two nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Rodney Schermerhorn.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Schermerhorn will be celebrated on Friday at 11:00 am in Saint Joseph the Worker RC Church Richfield Springs. The Reverend Father Silvaster Sarihaddula, pastor officiating. Interment will follow in St. Josephs Cemetery, Richfield Springs.
