Obituary

RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Susan Kay Gardner age 48 of Ann Street passed away peacefully on Sunday evening June 30, 2013 in Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown.She had the comfort of her loving family at her side. She was born on July 28, 1964 in Herkimer daughter of Alice Mae Smagalski Gravelding and the late Richard J. Gravelding.A lifelong Richfield Springs resident she was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School.An honorably discharged US Army veteran she was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ. Sue was the recipient of the Sharpshooter, M-16 Rifle Medal and was discharged in November of 1982. She was at one time married to David Gardner of Richfield Springs.For the past twelve years she worked as office manager for the Schoer Fisch Inc. in Monticello. Susan had a strong faith in God and was a member of Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Richfield Springs. She had a true sense of community and was a very active member of the Richfield Springs American Legion Post, their Ladies Auxiliary and served as Executive Officer of the Legion. She also held a membership in the Richfield Springs AMVETS Post.In her leisure time she enjoyed cooking and the more people she could cook for the more she liked it.Around the home she found her serenity in gardening and working around the yard. To all who knew her, they will never forget, a thoughtful, caring and respectful lady with an unforgettable smile.She will be sadly missed by her many friends and family, especially her lifelong partner Charles West. Surviving are a daughter, Amanda Stone and her husband Chad of Richfield Springs, her mother Alice Gravelding of Richfield Springs, her companion Charles West of Richfield Springs, one brother, John Gravelding and his wife Laurie of Clinton, a sister, Licia Ronan and her husband David of Herkimer, two nieces, Jamie Gravelding of Clinton and Sara Ronan of Herkimer, two nephews Christopher Gravelding of Clinton and Michael Ronan of Herkimer, cherished grandkids Ashley and Ashton West and several cousins. A graveside service with military honors for Susan K. Gardner age 48, who died on June 30th will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 12 noon in St. Joseph Cemetery, Richfield Springs. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4:00 7:00 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs.
