Obituary

EAST HERKIMER - Thomas Richard Getman Dick age 94 of Pine Grove Roadpassed away peacefully on Saturday morning August 22, 2009 in Faxton-St. LukesMedical Center, New Hartford. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side. He was born on December 17, 1914 in Ilion, son of the late Floyd C. and Edith Mae Parker Getman. A lifelong area resident he was educated in the PainesHollow School, graduated from Mohawk High School and had attended Cornell University. On October 15, 1940 he was united in marriage with the former Doris Harper in the parsonage of the North Columbia Methodist Church. They made their home in Jordanville until 2006 when they moved to East Herkimer. Mr. Getman had two careers simultaneously. He owned and operated his own dairy farm for thirty-eight years as well as working as an insurance agent for Fulmont Insurance Inc. for thirty-seven years. He retired from farming in 1978 and the insurance business in 2000. He had a strong belief in God and was a devoted member of the Jordanville Federated Church. Mr. Getman held memberships in the Paines Hollow Grange since 1935 as well as the Warren Grange and Jordanville Grange and had served as Master of each of those granges respectively. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau and the Soil Conservation Committee. In recent years he found much pleasure in reading, especially western novels. Dick will always be remembered as a man with a true sense of community. Be it in his business, farm organizations or church he found great joy in doing for others. A friend to many he will be greatly missed. Surviving are his beloved wife of sixty-eight years, Doris, a son, Wayne Alan Getman and his wife Sara Hawkins of Newport, two daughters and their husbands Marcia J. and Glenn Armstrong of Jordanville, Mary Beth and Michael Homiack of Broomfield, CO, one sister Jean Shirley Thompson of Mohawk, seven grandchildren, Myron Getman, Christopher Getman, George Getman, Matthew Homiack, Damek Homiack, Diane Lauzun and Karen Armstrong, six great grandchildren, Audrey Lauzun, Elena Lauzun, James Lauzun, Juniper Rose Getman, Dominick Getman and Kyria Getman, along with several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Robert Charles Getman. Funeral service will take place on Saturday August 29th at 11:00 am in the Jordanville Federated Church. The Reverend Scott Hocking, Pastor will officiate. There are no calling hours. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Jordanville Federated Churchor the Jordanville Public Library. Envelopes will be available at the church service. Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.
