Obituary

HERKIMER - Thomas Skandera age 95 passed away peacefully on Friday, March 17, 2017 in Folts Home. He had the comfort of his loving family by his side. Tom was born on January 9, 1922 in Mahanoy, PA son of the late Paul and Anna Cernak Skandera. He was a graduate of VanHornesville Central School where he was active in the Future Farmers of Americas program at the school. For his exceptional participation in the Future Farmers of America he was awarded a bull that was provided by Owen D. Young as an annual honor that was given each year at the school. On June 24, 1945 he was united in marriage to the former Mildred Ferjanec in the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer. For many years they owned and operated their own dairy farm on Aney Hill Road in Mohawk. Mrs. Skandera preceded him in death on April 11, 1990 after forty-four years of marriage. Mr. Skandera retired from dairy farming in 1992. On December 13, 1993 he married Margaret Zaleski in Saint Josephs Roman Catholic Church, Richfield Springs. They made their home in Herkimer since that time. Mr. Skandera had a strong faith in God and was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. During his years of farming he was an active member of the Farm Bureau. To all who knew him Tom was a kind, caring and hardworking gentleman. He was always there to help others while looking for nothing in return. He will be sadly missed. Surviving are his devoted wife of twenty-three years Margaret, along with many nieces, nephews, step children, step-grand and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his four brothers, Paul, John, Samuel and Martin Skandera. Calling hours for Mr. Skandera will be on Monday (Today) from 4:00 until 6:00 pm in Fenner Funeral home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. Funeral service will be on Tuesday at 11:00 am in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer with the Reverend Ann Zimmerman, Pastor officiating. Interment will be later this spring in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, town of Little Falls. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
