Obituary

WEST WINFIELD - Vaughn L. Smith, age 79, of South Road, entered into eternal rest on Friday, October 15, 2004, in Chase Nursing Home, New Berlin. He had the comfort of his family at his side. He was born on January 7, 1925, in Burlington Flats the son of the late Howard and Myrtle (Joslin) Smith. A life long area resident he attended a one-room schoolhouse in Burlington Flats and graduated from Edmeston High School. On October 14, 1946, he married the former Bertha Hadsell in West Exeter. They moved to the family farm and raised six children. Most of his life was spent working on the family farm. Working the dairy farm and hauling milk he retired in the early 1990s. Vaughn had a strong love for the outdoors and nature. He especially enjoyed working in the woods. He was a member of the Milker's CO-OP and an honorary member of the Farm Bureau. During his leisure time he enjoyed bowling. Vaughn was a caring and helpful person who was happiest when surrounded by his family and will be greatly missed. Surviving are his devoted wife of 58 years, Bertha, six children and their families, Bryan and Ruthann Smith of New Berlin, Lucy and John Schram of Manchester, NY, Carolyn and Richard Patrick of W. Winfield, Trudy and John Piscione of E. Winfield, Bradley and Jackie Smith of Summerfield, FL, Wayne and Tracy Smith of W. Winfield, seventeen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a sister June Carey of Burlington Flats. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Marguerite Lowe. Funeral Service from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs will be on Monday at 1:00 p.m. The Reverend Charles Fitch, Pastor, of the Baptist Unadilla Forks Church will officiate. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in Vaughns memory may be made to the Alzheimers Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
