MOHAWK – Viola Rose Church, 86, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2024, at Albany Medical Center.
She was born on November 8, 1937, in Cedarville NY, a daughter of the late Floyd N. and Doris (Boudry) Ford. She was raised by Lyle and Bess Washburn and attended primary school in Cedarville and West Winfield High School. On June 2, 1956,she was united in marriage to Robert Leon Church in the First United Methodist Church, Herkimer; they shared a devoted union of 50 years until his passing on January 28, 2007.
As a military couple, Viola and Bob made their homethroughout the US and abroad. Following Bob's service, they returned to live in Herkimer where she worked as a school crossing guard for L.W. Bill School, and in 1980, they moved to their home in Mohawk.
In addition to raising five Loving sons, she enjoyed cooking, spending time with her devoted family, especially playing family games and cards. Her love of animals, specifically watching and feeding the many birds – especially hummingbirds - that took refuge at the feeders she supplied, brought her much joy. She was kind, she was gracious. She enjoyed life, and truly lived it. Some have called her a "spit fire" with a vivacious sense of humor. She could make facial expressions that could warm many hearts. She was a great friend to many and adored her family.
Surviving are five sons and their families, Robert Jr, and Gary Slavin of NYC, David and Tina of Highland Park IL, Dale and Janice of Pataskala, OH, Mark and Robin of Mohawk, and Michael Church also of Mohawk, and brother David (Gloria) Ford of Herkimer. She was blessed with eight grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and husband, as well as 19 of her 21 siblings.
