HERKIMER-Vivian S. Davis age 88 formerly of the East German Street Extension, passed away peacefully on Friday morning July 13, 2012 in Saint Lukes Home, New Hartford. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side.
She was born on March 28, 1924 in Herkimer, daughter of the late Herbert K. and Elva L. Hartom Spencer. A lifelong Herkimer resident she was a graduate of Herkimer High School. She furthered her education, graduating from the Utica School of Commerce.
On March 19, 1945 she was united in marriage with George C. Davis in Milford, CT. They shared a blessed union of fifty years until his passing on August 25, 1995.
Mrs. Davis was an accomplished seamstress. For ten years she worked for Kordeen Dress Manufacturing in Herkimer and later went on to be a self-employed seamstress, retiring in 1985.
Vivian was a lady with a very strong sense of community and was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Herkimer. She was a member of the Order of the Amaranth where she served as the Grand Representative to the state of California, she belonged to the Citizens Advisory Board, was an Election Board Inspector, a sixty-five year volunteer for the American Red Cross, she was one of the first registered volunteers to join the YWCA Rape Crisis Program here locally, and was active in Boy Scouting as a Den Mother. In 1972 she became a member of the Michael S. Pliseck Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 4915 in Herkimer where she was life member in the Ladies Auxiliary, was a Past District President and had served three times as County Council President of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Davis loved her country and its flag. For many years under the Americanism Program she presented American flags to many of the area public schools. In her leisure she enjoyed bowling, latch hook and camping.
To all who knew her she was a kind, caring and gentle woman who was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family, especially her cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.
Surviving are her daughter, Elva M. Abrams and her companion James Dundon Sr. of Frankfort, one son Dave Kenyon Davis and his wife Thea of Ilion, eleven grandchildren, Andria Delisle Heath and her husband Alan, George Delisle and his companion Kim Gennuso, Denise Cockey and her companion Rodney Wells, Dave K. Davis II and his companion Betty Santos, Tamme Wheeler and her husband Randy, Timothy Abrams and his companion Karen Kenniston, Jennifer Elthorp and her companion Steve Quaif, Dwane Davis and his wife Dana, Danny Davis, Johnny Davis and Brittany Elthorp, twenty-four great-grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husband George she was preceded in death by a daughter, Delida Faye Davis in 1946, two brothers, Kenneth and Ernest Spencer and two sisters, Marjory Addie Alling and Wauletta Bennett.
Funeral service for Mrs. Davis will be on Wednesday at 10:00 am in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. Pastor Paul Bannister will officiate. Interment will follow in Roseboom Cemetery, Roseboom, NY. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm. Mrs. Davis family wish to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Saint Lukes Home, especially those on Barton East.
