HERKIMER - Walter D. Carswell, 69, of Steuben Road, died on Thursday morning, January 6, 2000, in Saint Elizabeths Hospital, Utica.
Born on August 10, 1930, in Herkimer, he was the son of Anne Donovan Carswell and the late Harry N. Carswell. A lifelong Herkimer resident he graduated High School "Class of 1947", continuing his education at St. Barnard College in Cullman, AL.
On June 30, 1951, he married Eleanor Smith in St. Francis deSales Church Herkimer. An honorably discharged US Army veteran he was stationed in Munich Germany during the Korean War. For many years he and his father worked together in their own Construction business. He later worked for Chicago Pneumatic for 26 years before retiring in 1990.
Walter was a loving husband, father and grandfather, who devoted his life to his family.
Surviving besides his mother, are his wife of 48 years, Eleanor; four sons, Mark and his wife Claire Carswell of Sarasota, Fl, Matthew and his wife Kim Carswell of Canastota, John and his wife Lisa Carswell of Herkimer, and Luke Carswell of Syracuse; four sister, Mary and her husband Charles Crandall Jr. of Herkimer, Anne and her husband Daniel Moller of Davisburg, MI, Helen and her husband Renny Abrams of Dover Plains and Lois Cassillo of Herkimer; seven grandchildren, Mark, Nicole, Krista, Matthew, Ryan, Jessica and Samantha Carswell; 20 nieces and nephews; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his son Jude Carswell in 1974.
Funeral service will be Sunday 1:00 p.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, with the Rev. Peter Nabozny, pastor of St. Francis deSales Church, Herkimer. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Calling hours Saturday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.. Memorial donation may be made to the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
