MOHAWK - Mr. Walter J. Duke Fistick, 91, of Vickerman Hill, Mohawk passed away on Thursday evening, January 10, 2008 in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown. At the time of his passing, he had the love and support of his grandchildren, their immediate family, friends, and Hospice by his side.
He was born November 6, 1916 in East Herkimer the son of the late Michael and Anna Severski Fistick.. He graduated from Mohawk High School where he held NYS pole-vaulting record . He was united in marriage with Helen Cristman on December 7, 1940, a union of 55 years until Helens passing on March 13, 1996. He was last employed by the Town of German Flatts and prior to that was employed by the New York State DEC as a Trapper.
Duke was a volunteer fireman for the Mohawk Fire Department and Exempt Firemans Association, Lodge Master of the Mohawk Valley Masonic Lodge No. 276 F&AM, avid outdoors man and enjoyed antiquing and operating the "This and That antique shop with his wife Helen. He enjoyed the time he spent telling hunting, trapping, and snow plowing stories and he will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Survivors include his children; Robert Fistick and his wife Patricia of Maryland and David Fistick of North Carolina. Grandchildren; Virginia Fistick Hupp and husband Dennis, Kristin Baker and husband Patrick, Derek Day and wife Holly, Lt. Kirk Cristman Fistick, United States Coast Guard, and wife Carrie, David Fistick, Jr., Bernard Fistick, PFC. Brandon Fistick,US Army and Jason Fistick. In addition, his seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife Helen he was preceded in death by his daughter Debra Crossett, four brothers Joseph, Alex and Stanley Fistick and an earlier Stanley Fistick who died in 1918; and three sisters Julia Bruska, Celia Gramadsky and Mary Wood.
A memorial service for Duke and his wife Helen, as they wished, will be held on Saturday April 19th, at 6:00 p.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer with Kenneth Palmer, Chaplain of the Mohawk Fire Department officiating. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. (two hours prior to the service). Members of Evening Valley Star Chapter No. 82 Order of Eastern Star are asked to assemble at the funeral home to conduct ritualistic services for Helen at 4:30 p.m. Members of Winfield Lodge No. 581 F&AM are asked to assemble at the funeral home to conduct ritualistic services for Duke at 5:30 p.m.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in memory of Duke or Helen with donations to the Mohawk Fire Department, Winfield Masonic Lodge No. 581 F&AM, Evening Star, Valley Chapter No. 82 O.E.S. and Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Oneonta. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
