EAST HERKIMER - Walter Nichols, 84, of Walnut Avenue, entered into eternal rest Monday morning, June 30, 2003, in Little Falls Hospital.
He was born July 7, 1918, in Herkimer, son of the late Peter and Pauline Nichols. A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of Herkimer High School, "class of 1935." Walter was an honorably discharged U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. On July 30, 1949, he married Marjorie Wandover in the First United Methodist Church in Herkimer. They have resided in East Herkimer since 1987, coming from Ilion. For 43 years, Mr. Nichols was employed as a machinist for the Remington Arms Co., Ilion. He retired in 1982. Walter had a close relationship with God and was a member of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer-Little Falls. He was also a member of the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post 25, Mohawk. In his leisure time he enjoyed repairing cars and was known to have a knack for fixing just about anything that was broken. He will be truly missed by his many friends and family, especially his grandchildren. Surviving besides his loving wife of 53 years, Marjorie, are one son, Douglas and his wife Debbie Nichols of Williamsburg, Va.; three daughters, Shirley and her husband Robert Pultorak of New York Mills, Jean and her husband Edward Pallone of Mesa, Ariz., and Nancy Nichols of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; a brother, Stanley and his wife Opal Nichols of Lexington, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Mary Nichols of New York Mills; three grandchildren, Thomas Pultorak and his friend Shantele Mullin of Oswego, Kristy Pultorak of New York Mills and Carrie Pallone of Mesa, Ariz.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Walter was preceded in death by a brother, Steven Nichols, and a sister, Helen Nichols. Funeral service will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer. The Rev. William Harkins will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the First United Methodist Church Herkimer-Little Falls Memorial Fund. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.
