Walter Eugene Scram devoted and beloved husband and father went to spend eternity with God. Walter was born on January 24, 1918 to parents Loran Daniel and Grace Irene Evans Scram. He was a lifelong resident of Herkimer. Walter graduated from Herkimer High School in 1938 where he lettered in three sports; baseball, football and captained his basketball team. He continued his education a Morrisville Ag. Tech. where he also lettered in baseball, football and basketball. He graduated in 1940 with a degree in agriculture. Recognized for his sports accomplishments his plaque is located in the Morrisville State Colleges Wall of Fame. During the next year he traveled from farm to farm in CNYS testing milk. He later took employment with the Remington Arms Company, in Ilion until January 1942 when he was drafted into the US Army and attended basic training in Fort Belvoir, VA. He was then sent to MacDill AFB in Tampa, FL where he graduated from US geographic School and subsequently joined the 954th Engineering Aviation Topographic Company. Walter was a member of the Greatest Generation serving in WW II in the North Africa and Italian Theaters spending time in Casablanca, Morocco, Algiers and Italy. Walter was personally involved in creating maps that charted the way for President Roosevelt and General Eisenhower. Water attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and also received a letter of recommendation for direct commission to Lieutenant. Upon culmination of WWII Walter received an honorable discharge on November 5, 1945. In 1946 he gained employment with the Village of Herkimer as Supervisor of the Electric Meter Department. On January 18, 1947 he married the love of his life, the former Clara Virginia Pierce in Herkimer, to whom he was married one month short of fifty years, when Clara predeceased him. In 1961 he transferred employment to Niagara Mohawk Power Company Corporation as a Commercial Representative when the Herkimer Municipality sold out to NiMo retiring from the same in 1981.
Walter was heavily involved in serving his community as evidenced by his political and recreational accomplishments. During the ate 1940s he coached the Herkimer Merchants town basketball team. In 1955 representing the First Methodist Church, together with Reverend Calvin Moon of the Baptist Church they formed the Herkimer Church Basketball League which existed for over fifteen years providing young men with an opportunity to develop their skills and grow socially with in the community. Walter also served on the Village of Herkimer Recreational Board for eight years and was recipient of the Mary Campbell Award for his involvement in facilitating the development of the Herkimer Municipal Swimming Pool at Basloe Field. Walter also served as Herkimer Trustee on the Herkimer Village Board from 1969 to 1970. Walters civic associations also included the Boy Scouts of America, Herkimer Lodge Free and Accepted Masons, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, International Brotherhood Electric Workers,as well as teaching the Methodists Boys Sunday School Class for a number of years and teaching electrical courses for BOCES. Walter was a member of the First Baptist Church Little Falls and was a Born Again Believer who had a deep faith in God and was bold in sharing his faith with others. Walters interests included sports, hunting, fishing, camping, bowling, square dancing and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a fixture for many years at HCCC and Herkimer High School sporting events until his health began to fail.
He leaves behind two sons and a daughter-in-law who was like the daughter that he never had; Walter and Jean Scram of Berne, Guy Scram of Herkimer, four grandchildren, Jennifer Frias of Hagerstown, MD, Walter Scram III and his wife Stefanie of Berne, Andrew Scram and wife Kori of Ballston Spa, Sarah rivera and husband Jerry of West Lawn, PA, great grandchildren, Blake, Grant, Claire and Gabriel Scram; Alexis, Lacey and Jenna Gallagher; brothers, Loren Scram of Herkimer and Edward Scram and his wife Marilyn of Huntington, PA, Walter was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Ford and Helen Hoerner.
Calling hours for Mr. Scram will be on Sunday from 2:00 until 4:00pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc. 115 Court Street; Herkimer. Funeral service will be on Monday at 10:00am in the funeral home with the Reverend Christopher Wintermute, Pastor of the Little Falls Baptist Church officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
