RICHFIELD SPRINGS - William T.(Bill) Cantwell age 87 of Prey Hill Road passed away on Saturday afternoon July 2, 2011 in the Katherine Luther Home, Clinton .He had the comfort and support of his loving family at his side.
He was born on January 2, 1924 in Utica, son of the late Thomas H. and Mary F. Dugan Cantwell. Bill was raised in Utica and was a graduate of Saint Francis DeSales middle school. In 1937 he with his family moved to Richfield Springs where he completed his education at Richfield Springs High School. On February 19, 1955 he was united in marriage with the former Lillian Krause in Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs.
Bill was both a dairy farmer and independent truck owner. He remained on the family farm working with his brother Jack as well as hauling for the quarry in Jordanville in the summer and working for Oneida Motor Freight Company in the winter. In 1958 he went to work for the Dairylea Company's Traffic division in Vernon, NY. He retired after 28 years of dedicated service. Among his many achievements he was awarded the Million Mile Safe Driving Award and the Century Farm award.
Bill was of the Catholic faith. He was a member of Saint Joseph the Worker Church and a member of the Holy Name Society in Richfield Springs. He also was a member of the Herkimer Elks Lodge # 1439 B.P.O.E.
To those who knew him, Bill will always be remembered for his quick Irish wit, outgoing personality and devotion to his family. He was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.
Surviving are his beloved wife of fifty-six years, Lillian, a son, Timothy M. Cantwell and his wife Susan, a daughter, Carol Frigault and her husband Larry, two cherished grandchildren, Michael & Meghan Cantwell all of Richfield Springs. a sister-in-law Mary Cantwell of Portland, Oregon, Blanche & Bob Rapenske of Glen Rock, NJ, and June Krause of Edmonds, WA., nephews Thomas Cantwell and wife Georgia and John Cantwell and wife Peggy amany beloved nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, John D. Cantwell, and brother in laws Albert & Philip Krause.
The family will be present to receive relatives and friends at the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home,40 West James Street; Richfield Springs on Wednesday July 6, from 5:00 until 8:00 pm. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday July 7 at 11:00am in Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, West Winfield. The Reverend Terence Healey, Pastor will officiate, and Reverend Michael Guzik S.J. will be the homilist. Interment will follow in Saint Joseph's Cemetery, Richfield Springs.
