Obituary

William A. Fredlund , 92, of Herkimer, passed away on Sunday March 12, 2017, with his loving family by his side. Bill was born in Brooklyn, NY on April 3, 1924, the son of Harry and Martha (Otto) Fredlund. He was raised in Freeport, NY, and was a 1942 graduate of Freeport High School. After WWII, he earned his civil engineering degree from Auburn University. Bill was a New York State Licensed Professional Engineer. Bill proudly served his country in the US Army, as a member of the 41st Infantry Division. He saw combat in the Philippines, and served in Hiroshima, Japan, just weeks after the Enola Gay dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima (August 8, 1945.) He remained there until his honorable discharge in December 1945. He was a recipient of the Philippines Liberation Ribbon, Bronze Star, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Bill met Marjory Alice Jones--the love of his life--at Christmas Time in 1951. They were married November 1, 1952. Marjory and Bill shared a loving and devoted union of 64 years. They had 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Marjory and Bills unconditional love for each other was the foundation of our family life. In 1962, Bill accepted the position as Village Engineer, for the Village of Herkimer. During his tenure, he worked tirelessly to guide Herkimer forward during its last major period of expansion (1962-1982.) In the mid 1960s Bill initiated and led the effort to raise community awareness about the fact that it was no longer OK for a community to discharge raw sewage into the Mohawk River. After many years of unwavering commitment, the Herkimer Water Pollution Control Plant was completed circa 1970. It still serves Herkimer today. In the late 1960s the Valley communities were competing for the honor of having Herkimer County Community College built in their respective community. It was Bill who had the vision to propose and advocate for building the college atop an otherwise unassuming, undeveloped hilltop, on the extreme northern end of the Herkimer. Not only was it geologically and geographically appropriateif one made the effort to climb the hill--it provided an awe inspiring view of the Valley below. HCCC opened on that site in 1971. After 27 years of devoted service to his community, Bill retired in 1989. His vast knowledge and insight served his community well. During his working years, Mr. Fredlund also served his community on numerous non-profit boards. In 1969 Bill and a handful of fathers founded Herkimer Short League Baseball. Short League survived for decades, before being absorbed into Little League, B League. He was a founding member and former president of MOVAC ambulance corps. Bill also volunteered his time and talents at the Herkimer Salvation Army, the Herkimer Food Pantry and the Herkimer County Historical Society. Mr. Fredlund was a proud member and past president of the Herkimer Rotary Club. He lived his entire life by the simple, poignant and purposeful words of the Rotary International motto; Service Above Self. Bill was a life-long railroad enthusiastboth model--and real. It was a passion he enjoyed sharing will all of his children and grandchildren. The family would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to the devoted caregivers who assisted the family in providing loving care and comfort to Bill and Marjory. The family would also like to thank the dedicated and professional staff on the 6th floor at St Lukes Hospital, for the care and comfort they provided Bill in his final week.
