Obituary

HARTWICK - William R. Grup, age 76 of County Highway #16, town of Exeter entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November 28, 2004.He was born Dec. 18, 1927, in Gloversville, son of the late William and Florence Chesbrough Grup. William was raised in Gloversville and was a graduate of Gloversville High School. An honorably discharged U.S. Navy veteran, he served in the Pacific during World War II. On Dec. 31, 1949, he married the former S. Patricia Lake in Colorado Springs, Colo., a loving and devoted union of 50 years. She preceded him in death on March 1, 2000. For 33 years Mr. Grup worked in the Shipping and Receiving Department of the Remington Arms Co., retiring in 1983. A resident of Hartwick since 1962, he and his wife came from Ilion.William had a true sense of community. He had served as Exeter town councilman and for over 16 years as town justice. He was a member of the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department, Schuyler Lake Lodge 162 F&AM, where he served as Master in 1972, a Past Patron in 1972 and member of Arbutus Chapter Order of the Eastern Star Richfield Springs, scout master of the Schuyler Lake Boy Scout Troop, an assistant coach with the Richfield Springs Little League in 1970, as well as a member of the Exeter Historical Society and Winfield Vets Club. All who knew Bill will remember him as a warm, friendly, caring man who was always there to help others. He will be greatly missed by many.Surviving him are a son, William and his wife Laura Grup of Richfield Springs; two daughters, Sharon and her husband Alan Dutton of Cooperstown, Theresa Schweitzer of Felton, Pa.; one sister, Doris Klusner of Arizona; five grandchildren, Kristen, Kyle Grup, Lindsey and Neil Dutton and Patrick Schweitzer; several nieces, nephews and cousins.Besides his parents and wife, Pat, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Grup, one brother, Howard Grup, and a sister, Eleanor Mazano.Funeral service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. The Rev. John Young will officiate. Interment in Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion, will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 6.The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. Members of Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department are asked to meet at the funeral home on Wednesday evening for services at 8 p.m.Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
