HERKIMER-William Douglas Humphrey age 93 passed away unexpectedly on Monday afternoon September 1, 2014 in his home. He had the comfort of his loving family surrounding him. He was born on March 17, 1921 in Herkimer, son of the late Harry and Gladys Richard Humphrey. A lifelong Herkimer resident he was a graduate of Herkimer High School. An honorably discharged veteran of World War Two, he proudly served with the United States Navy Air Corps from 1942 until 1945. On August 18, 1943 he was united in marriage with the former Jean Seavey in Jacksonville, FL. After the war they returned to Herkimer to make their home and raise a family. In 1946 Bill started his own business, William D. Humphrey Memorials located on State Route 28 in Herkimer. He successfully served the community of Herkimer for fifty-two years, retiring in 1998. Mr. Humphrey maintained a strong faith in God and was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls. He was a Fifty-five year member of Olive Branch Lodge # 40 Free and Accepted Masons and a member of the Fox Hunters Field Trail Association where he served as President for four years. To those who knew Bill they will never forget a caring, honest and compassionate man. Any conversation with him was straight and to the point yet you always felt his warmth and friendship whenever you were with him. He will be truly missed by his many friends and family especially his cherished grandchildren. Surviving are his devoted wife of seventy-one years Jean, three daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Daryl Mowers of Ilion, Linda and Ritchie Carpenter of Herkimer, Jean and David Marconi of Syracuse, six grandchildren, Kristin Martin, Philip Martin, Emma Carpenter, Kyle Carpenter and his wife Kimberly, Brian Mowers and his fiance Kristen Manley, Ashley (Mowers), Dondrea and her husband Nicholas, a very special great-granddaughter, Camden Dondrea, who was his pride and joy, along with several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death a son Harry William Humphrey, two brothers, H. Robert Humphrey and John Humphrey. Calling hours for Mr. Humphrey will be on Friday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm in the funeral home. The Reverend Janet Gleason, pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little falls, will officiate. Interment with military honors accorded by the US Navy will take place immediately after in Oak Hill Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls Memorial Fund or the Wounded Warriors Project. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Members of Olive Branch Lodge # 40 F & AM are asked to meet at the funeral home on Friday at 12:30 pm for ritualistic services.
