Obituary

HERKIMER-William Joseph Lockwood Sr. age 88 passed away on Wednesday morning March 23, 2016 in Saint Elizabeths Medical Center, Utica. He had the support and comfort of his loving family by his side. He was born on February 27, 1928 in Little Falls, son of the late Edward J. and Eva M. Keyes Lockwood. A lifelong area resident he was raised and educated in Herkimer. During World War II, Bill answered the call of his country by joining the US Army where he served in the Occupation of Japan. He was honorably discharged at the end of the war attaining the rank of Private First Class. On July 31, 1948 he was united in marriage to the former Shirley Morrisette in the Annunciation Church, Ilion. They shared a loving and devoted union of over fifty-one years until her passing on March 30, 2000. For twenty-three years Mr. Lockwood worked as a Senior Mechanical Building Specialist for the International Business Machine Corporation in Owego. He retired in 1989. In 2013 William moved to Herkimer coming from Richfield Springs. Mr. Lockwood had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Annunciation Church, Ilion. To all who knew him he was a kind, caring, sincere man who had a genuine devotion to his family and read the bible daily. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hiking, chopping wood and going for rides in the country. He had a special place in his heart for animals. Bill also took much pride in his carpentry skills and made many improvements to the homes that he and his family had lived in. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family especially his cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. Surviving him are, two daughters, Kathleen A. Kisel of Little Falls, Teresa R. Lockwood of Herkimer, six sons, William J. Lockwood Jr. and wife Sue of Demarest, GA, Edward J, Lockwood and wife Norma of Dallas, TX, James L. Lockwood and wife Anita of Little Falls, Daniel A. Lockwood and wife Jean of Mohawk, Michael C. Lockwood of Herkimer, John P. Lockwood of Athens, PA, twenty-one grandchildren, Twenty-five great grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents and wife Shirley he was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Larry Lockwood, five sisters, Nathleen Herkel, Catherine Baker, Leta Zaengle, Elizabeth Denny and Rita Tanner. Calling hours for Mr. Lockwood will be on Tuesday from 5:00 until 7:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. Funeral from the funeral home will be on Wednesday at 9:45 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am in the Annunciation Church, Ilion with the Reverend Paul Catena, pastor officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Saint Marys Cemetery, town of Herkimer. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Herkimer County Humane Society or the Herkimer Area Resource Center. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
