HERKIMER-William R. Petrie age 79 of Willis Avenue passed away on Wednesday morning July 11, 2007 in Valley Health Services Inc.
He was born on May 11, 1928 in Herkimer, son of the late Russell and Lillian Cassel Petrie. A lifelong Herkimer resident, he was a graduate of Herkimer High School class of 1946. He furthered his education at Mohawk Valley Community College. On April 18, 1953 he was united in marriage with the former Imelda Bergin in the Church of the Annunciation in Ilion. A devoted union of twenty-seven years, until her passing on July 15, 1980. He later married Jacquelyn (Janus) Vogel on June 14, 1986 in Herkimer.
Mr. Petrie was employed as a computer technician for UNIVAC in both Ilion and Utica and later for I.C.L., retiring in 1996.
He had a strong belief in God and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. In his younger years he enjoyed the outdoors and spent much of his leisure time hunting and fishing. He also found great relaxation and kept busy working on his computer, watching baseball games, gardening and doing crossword puzzles. He was a member of the East Herkimer Fish & Game Club, the Fort Dayton Steamers and the Oak Hill Cemetery Board.
We can rejoice that Bill was a part of our lives. His down to earth manner flowed from his character and you could feel a warmth and friendship whenever you were with him. To his many friends and family will be greatly missed.
Surviving are his loving wife of twenty-one years, Jacquelyn, one son, William J. Petrie and his wife Gibbie of Lynchburg, VA, Michael Vogel of Utica, a daughter Barbara Petrie Hook and her husband Richard of Cincinnati, OH, two step-sons, William Vogel of Baltimore, MD, two step-daughters, Barbara Vogel Cortes of Moorestown, NJ, Brenda Vogel of Syracuse, three grandchildren, Mary and John Petrie of Lynchburg, VA and Sydney Cortes of Moorestown, NJ.
Funeral service with Holy Eucharist will be on Saturday at 10:00 am in Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Paul Bailey, Rector will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be present in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer to receive relatives and friends on Friday from 5:00 until 8:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Christ Episcopal Church Memorial Fund. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. The family wishes to express deep appreciation to the staff at Valley Health Services Inc. for their outstanding care and compassion shown to Bill during his stay.
