MOHAWK - William Owen Schoenfisch, age 90, formerly of Kingston and Jersey City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, June 24, 2003 in the Mohawk Homestead were he has resided since 1999.
He was born on November 23, 1912 in Jersey City, New Jersey a son of the late Henry Oscar and Elizabeth (Glasson) Schoenfisch. Raised and educated in Jersey City he graduated from Dickinson high school. In 1940 he married Helen Logan in Jersey City. Helen died on November 19, 1988. During WW II he served with the US Navy Seabees on many of the Japanese held Islands. He was honorably discharged on January 26, 1946. For over 30 years he worked as a Real Estate Broker. From 1950 until 1970 he worked for John J. Connelly and Associates in Totowa, NJ and then for Century 21 in Little Falls, NJ. He retired in 1990. After his retirement he moved to Kingston, where he resided until moving to Mohawk. While living in New Jersey he was a member of the Kiwanis Club. He was a life member of the American Legion Post of West Paterson, NJ. He was a community minded man who was an outstanding example of true volunteerism. He took great pride in his volunteer work at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston. He received citations and personal letters for his outstanding accomplishment for the thousands of volunteer hours he served from the then Mayor of Kingston, Governor Mario Coumo and US Congressman Maurice Hinchey as well as a testimonial from Benedictine Hospital. While living at the Mohawk Homestead he continued to do volunteer work. He enjoyed working with the pre-school program at the Y.M.C.A. in Mohawk.
Surviving are two sons, William Kent Schoenfish and his wife Nancy Gail of Richfield Springs, Donald Stuart Schoenfish of Brockton, MA; three grandchildren, Jennifer Anne Schoenfish of Waterford, Jeffrey Schoenfish of Virginia Beach, VA, Brian Shoenfish of SanDiego, CA, one greatgrandson, Cameron Shoenfisch of Virgina Beach, VA, several nieces and nephews.
Interment will take place in Hollywood Memorial Park Union, New Jersey at a time convenient to the family. There are no calling hours.
