UTICA-William Huntley Wilbur, age 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday June 3, 2021 at Sitrin Health Care, New Hartford with close friends at his side. He was born on September 8, 1932 in Syracuse, son of the late Reverend William A. and Mira Huntley Wilbur. Bill grew up in Central New York and graduated from Mohawk High School and Utica College. Bill served in the US Navy and later taught history for many years in Remsen Central School. He subsequently was employed at Upstate Cerebral Palsy. Bill was a long time resident of Barneveld.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, his cousin Charles Huntley, his grandmother Mattie Geer Huntley and many aunts and uncles. Bill leaves his cousins Allen J. Huntley, Evelyn Huntley Fassett, Marilyn Huntley Audlin, Pamela Jane Speers, Judith Ann Dell, Sandra Birmingham, Ronald Huntley and Barbara Huntley, along with many close friends too numerous to mention. Bill was also grateful to his aides who helped care for him the past several years with much love and affection.
Bill was a warm and compassionate man with a great love for life and learning. He had a wide circle of friends with whom he shared fulfilling relationships. Bill loved history, especially local history, and was active in both the Oneida County and Remsen-Steuben Historical Societies, as well as the FortNightly Club of Remsen. Bill was also a long time member of the Foothills Rotary Club and participated in the Mohawk Valley Institute for Learning in Retirement (MVILR) as well as the FOBS Club. Bill had a great love for the Adirondacks and especially Lake Placid, from where he had wonderful memories of summer work at the Mirror Lake Inn as a young man.
Calling hours for Bill will be on Tuesday, June 8th from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, June 9th at 11:00 am at the funeral home with the Reverend James Barnes officiating. Interment will follow in Mohawk Cemetery.
Bill benefited from the devoted care given to him in his final days by the staff at the SitrinHealth Care Center, and by his friends Kevin Olmstead and Tracy Clark. All those who knew Bill loved him, and always felt that their lives were made better by having known him. He will be sadly missed.
