Obituary

MOHAWK-Wilna Lorine Beckman, age 91, of Bellinger Street, passed away in her home on Saturday evening May 23, 2009 after a long illness. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side. She was born on March 27, 1918 in Pitcairn, daughter of the late Earl Bradford and Mona Curry Tiffany. Wilna was a graduate of Carthage High Schoolwith the class of 1934. She continued her education at Potsdam Normal School, graduating in 1937 receiving her teaching credentials. On October 25, 1941 she was united in marriage with Gerald S. Forbes in Vermont. They shared a loving and devoted union of over Twenty-nine years until his passing on March 6, 1970. For thirty years she taught school throughout the north-country teaching in many one and two room school houses. She retired in 1973 from the Madrid-Waddington Central School System where she had served as Elementary Supervisor. After her retirement from teaching she entered Jefferson Community College where she received her degree in nursing. Wilna worked as Charge Nurse at Samaritan-Keep Nursing Home in Watertown.On April 16, 1977 she married Edgar M. Beckman. They made their home at Cranberry Lake. Together they enjoyed traveling and spending their winters in Lake Wales, FL until 1994 when Mr. Beckman passed away. Mrs. Beckman has resided full time in the Mohawk Valleysince 1993. Wilna had a strong belief in God and was a member of First Baptist Church Herkimer. She was a member of Zenith, Copenhagen, Carthage Chapter # 346 Order of the Eastern Star, Lowville, a charter member of the West Potsdam Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, New York State Retired Teachers Association, AARP and a member of Widowed Persons Service. To all who knew her, they will remember a gifted woman, wheather she was teaching young children at school or caring for the elderly in a nursing home, her love for others always showed. She will be greatly missed. Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Carol and Carl Matthie of Mohawk, Sandra and Gary Fauvelle of Ilion, one son, Bruce M. and his wife Nancy Forbes of Greenwood Village, CO, a sister, Vivian (Siver) Whiting and her husband GR Whitey of Winter Haven, FL, three grandchildren, Steven Matthie of Salisbury, Christopher and his wife Elizabeth Matthie of Chester, VA, Susan Matthie of Mohawk, five great-grandchildren, Christopher Matthie of Chester, and his mother, Michaela Matthie of Baumholder, Germany, Kaitlyn and Andrew Matthie of Chester, VA, Cayenne and Nicole Matthie of Mohawk, three nieces and three nephews along with the adult children of the late Edgar Beckman.. Besides her parents and two husbands, Gerald S. Forbes and Edgar M. Beckman she was preceded in death by her grandson David C. Matthie on February 26, 2009. Funeral service will be on Friday at 2:00 pm in the First Baptist Church Herkimer. The Reverend Patricia Lawrence, Pastor will officiate. Interment will take place at a later date in King DaughtersCemetery, Potsdam, NY T he family will be present in the church to receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the funeral service (1:00 to 2:00 pm). Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the First Baptist Church Herkimer, Widowed Persons Service of the Mohawk Valleyor Catholic Charities. Envelopes will be available at the church service. Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home Inc., Herkimer.
