Obituary

HERKIMER Winfield Frederick Sheldon, age 92, formerly of Jordanville, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, February 15, 2018 at Faxton-St. Lukes Medical Center, New Hartford. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side. He was born on March 14, 1925, in Oneonta, son of the late Bartley and Ada Knott Sheldon. Winfield was raised and educated in Otego and worked on the family farm from a young age. An honorably discharged US Army veteran he served during World War II. In 1957 he was united in marriage to the former Ruth Dumond. They shared a loving and devoted union of forty-one years until her passing on December 3, 2008. Mr. Sheldons life was dedicated to dairy farming. He had owned farms in Mount Upton, Bainbridge and Jordanville, before retiring from dairy farming in 1985. He then went to work as a caretaker at Grand Gorge State Park in Keane, NH. To those who knew him he was a hardworking man with an unforgettable smile. Any conversation with him was straight and to the point yet you always felt his warmth and friendship whenever you were with him. He will be sadly missed by his many friends and family especially, his cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law Wayne and Michele Sheldon of Richfield Springs, a daughter, Linda Zaczek and her husband Joseph of Mt. Upton, two sisters, Grace Patria of Virginia and Dorothy Clark of Florida, seven grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents and wife Ruth, he was preceded in death by two brothers Bartley and Everett Sheldon and a granddaughter Karen McClain. A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Otego this spring at a time to be announced. There are no calling hours. Funeral arrangements are with J Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.
