HERKIMER Woodus "Woody" Johnson, Jr., aged 79, of Herkimer passed away peacefully on Saturday Morning April 29, 2017, in his home. He had the comfort of his family at his side at the time of his passing. Woody was born October 25, 1937 in Utica, a son to the late Woodus Johnson and Marion Gable Johnson. He was raised and educated in Whitesboro and a 1957 graduate of Whitesboro High School. He furthered his education, studying business at Mohawk Valley Community College obtaining an Associates Degree. Woody served in the United States Army as a reservist and was honorably discharged in 1965. He worked for Johnson's Decorating Center in Herkimer, later owning the business until retiring in 2009. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Mohawk Valley Sports Car Club in the 1960s and 1970s, was a championship winning automotive Ice Racer and raced at several New York State stock car tracks through the 1970s. He became an avid cyclist and member of the Mohawk Valley Bicycling Club. Woody had a passion for woodworking, spending many hours of his retirement crafting fine furniture. Surviving him are two sons Lance Johnson and his wife Cathy of Colchester, CT and Scott Johnson of Alexandria, VA, four grandchildren; Danielle, Cooper, Erica, and Rebecca. Woody was formerly married to Carol Fuller, last of Vero Beach, Florida; she predeceased him in 2009. Additionally, Woody leaves behind half-siblings Paula Ford and Eric Johnson. Funeral services for Woodus Johnson, Jr. were privately held at the convenience of the family. The family extends its extreme appreciation to the many friends in the local area that cared for Woody during his recent illness.Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Association.
